KIA EV6 – The New Electric Car

KIA EV6 – The New Electric Car

KIA, the South Korean car manufacturer has a new EV coming to the market. The new model dubbed the KIA EV6 has a lot of new features. Till now, we only have limited data on the EV6. But, we will be taking a look at what the model has to offer in this article.

A General Idea On the KIA EV6

Firstly, the KIA EV6 looks good. Appearance-wise the car looks like a smaller brother version of the Lamborghini Urus. The design philosophy of this model is “opposites attract”, referring to how the poles of the earth attract each other even though they are opposite.

The EV6 will be using Hyundai’s E-GMP which was used in the Hyundai Iqoniq 5. The E-GMP is an all-new 800-volt electric car platform by Hyundai. The platform boasts insane charging times, and a lot more design details. One major claim for the car is that it will be able to do 300 miles or 482 kilometers in one full charge.

As per KIA, which formally unveiled the EV6 in the US hopes to start doing deliveries by early 2022, that is next year. As mentioned, the car doe gives a lot of people the same vibes as the Urus. This comparison might not be on the list because the KIA EV6 GT might be able to defeat the Urus in a drag race at least to the 60mph mark.

The Different Powertrains For The KIA EV6

The new EV model from KIA will have 4 powertrain configurations available. The base variant will have a 58kWh battery and a 125 kW electric motor which will be able to produce 167 brake horsepower. This model of the EV6 will be a rear-wheel drive.

The second variant also has some minor differences, that is the increase in power and capacity of the battery. But, most probably, the car will also have interior altercations as we go through the higher variants. This model will feature a 77.4kWh battery pack with a 162kW motor which can produce 218 brake horsepower.

The third variant will be an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The variant will also have a larger battery too. It will feature a 233 kW electric motor which can produce 313 brake horsepower. According to KIA, the model will be able to do 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

The highest model and most probably the most expensive one is the KIA EV6 GT. This model will have a larger capacity of the battery and will feature an electric motor for each axle. The combined motor power will be 430 kW and will be able to produce 576 brake horsepower. As per KIA, this variant will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The E-GMP Powertrain

As mentioned before the EV6 will be using Hyundai’s E-GMP electric platform. This platform will be an 800-volt, meaning that there will be many benefits, including fast DC charging speeds. Mostly, these faster charging speeds can be achieved when connected to a 350 kW charger.

As per KIA, within 5 minutes, you will be able to add 70 miles or 112 kilometers. In other words, it will be able to charge from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. Home charging will take longer times, with speculations being seven hours to go from 10 to 100 percent on a 40 Ampere circuit. These stats will be able to make the KIA EV6 one of the most valuable and preferable electric cars if the car makes it to the market with the mentioned specs.

KIA KV6 As A Power Bank?

One of the more unique features of the KV6 will be its ability to charge other cars too. This feature is not seen in any other EVs, or rather no other manufacturer has thought about it. The EV6 can do this feat due to its battery pack.

The battery pack in the EV6 is more than capable of powering itself. So, the car can also charge a nearby car too. The model has an integrated charging control unit that can provide1.9 kW of power to a car through a 110-volt socket.

The EV6 will be able to charge another EV at a slow rate at 1.1 kW from a full battery charge. This charging feature will last until the battery pack has 10 percent remaining or after 36 hours. This feature will be helpful if you are traveling with other EV owners.

The Size Of The KIA EV6

As per reports, the size of the Kia EV6 is a compact one, when compared to its cousin car the Hyundai Iqoniq. The manufacturer has not yet released its official dimensions. Granted, we do know that it will feature a 114.2 inch or 2,900 mm wheelbase.

The EV6 also draws features from another cousin of its, the KIA Telluride. In a similar model, it has 2 rows of seats and a massive cargo compartment, then it would have if it were carrying a third row of passengers. The cargo compartment will be 27.7 cubic feet or 785 liters of cargo with the third seat in use. Without the seats in use, you will get 53.5 cubic feet or 1,515 liters of cargo space.

Ending Note

The KIA EV6 might make an impactful entry into the EV market if all that is seen on paper makes it to the actual model. Currently, KIA will start pre-orders for the EV6 First Edition by June 3, granted they will be only available in the US. Only 1,500 of the First Edition Variants will be made.

KIA also has not revealed the pricing on the vehicle. But, all that we can do is see where the car might develop into, and wait for its release in 2022.
