European importer of Dodge and RAM reports the introduction of the RAM 1500 pick-up with eTorque, a mild hybrid system that should ensure significant fuel savings. The move comes as the industry moves toward electrification, with more than a dozen new electric pickups joining the fold in the next two years. For RAM, the Ram 1500 is the company’s best-selling product and continues to fight General Motors’ (GM) Chevrolet brand for the second spot in full-size truck sales in America.
eTorque was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show last year. Working together with the familiar 5.7 liter Hemi V8, the system means that the traditional alternator is replaced by a belt-driven generator that performs various functions. The engine generator works with a 48 volt battery pack to enable a quick and seamless start/stop function, extra torque and braking energy regeneration, improving engine responsiveness as well as efficiency.

The truck should ride on a brand-new EV platform engineered by parent company Stellantis, called the STLA Frame. It’s one of four new platforms for electric vehicles, but the STLA Frame is the only architecture to support body-on-frame vehicles, like pickups. Ram 1500 models are available in six trim levels – Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Rebel, Laramie Longhorn and Limited – that each provides drivers with a signature style.

Produced as a joint project with the United States Department of Energy, a 140-vehicle fleet of Ram 1500 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) will be evaluated through true truck activities. It gets a mild-hybrid system with fuel-saving benefits and better all-round drivability from the 48 V battery pack and belt-drive motor generator unit.
Power and torque outputs are 291 kW of power at 5600 rpm and 556 Nm of torque from 3950 rpm through an eight-speed automatic transmission with a two-speed transfer case offering a range of drive modes, including 2WD High, 4WD Auto, 4WD High and 4WD Low. The claims are a 12 kW boost, short-term boost of supplementary power, brake energy regeneration, and what is surely the best start/stop system of any vehicle released in recent years.
